Departmental Immunization Requirements

The following academic departments have special health requirements that must be met by students:

Education Department

The Education Department has the requirement that all students must have an updated tuberculosis test (Mantoux test) within six months of the field experience.

College of Nursing

Because of the strenuous demands of nursing study and practice, and because of extra risk of exposure to illness, College of Nursing undergraduate and graduate students must have a health clearance.  To determine clearance, a health assessment must be done either by your personal health care provider or at Rutgers University Health Services.

Health Clearance Requirements:

1.      Health Assessment

Completion of a health certificate from the College of Nursing after a health history, physical examination, complete blood count, blood glucose and cholesterol levels, and a urinalysis.  This certificate determines medical clearance and must be completed once, immediately upon admission and during the first semester at the College of Nursing.

2.      The immunization Record form and information about immunizations can be downloaded by going to:  http://www.health.rutgers.edu; then click on forms.

Immunization/Immunity History

Nursing students must provide documentation of all the following:

a.       Immunity to measles, mumps and rubella (two doses or by a seropositive titer; if titer is negative, immunizations are required);

b.      *Hepatitis B three dose series or a seropositive  titer;

c.       Tetanus booster within the last 10 years;

d.      Proof of immunity to varicella (chickenpox) by a seropositive blood titer.  If the titer is negative, immunizations are required;

e.       Proof of meningitis (Menomune) immunization is required for all new first year and transfer undergraduates living in University housing.

NOTE:  *If the hepatitis series of immunizations is needed, the process takes seven months to complete.  If the varicella immunizations are needed, the series takes 30 to 45 days to complete.

3.      Tuberculosis Screening

A mantoux tuberculin skin test within the last year.  If you test negatively, you will need to be retested annually.  If you test positively, a chest X-ray must be performed and, if necessary, that must be followed by therapy.  The results of mantoux testing and chest x-ray must be recorded on your immunization form.
