The Rutgers University Health Services announces the 2004-05 Robert
H. Bierman Student Health Journalism Award. The purpose of this award
is to stimulate and recognize excellence in student journalism for printed
health articles, written by students for students.
This award is comprised of cash and a certificate, recognizing the four
best submissions, selected by the awards committee, which appeared in a
campus newspaper between 3/22/04 - 3/14/05. The award recognizes the best
single story (or one in a series) on a health-related issue (broadly
defined). Such stories might focus on sexuality, relationships,
drinking/drugging behavior on campus, impact of racism/sexism/homophobia
on student health, body image, current health trends/perception of college
students, and any topic which looks at health as a social issue requiring
collection action, rather than just personal behaviors or habits which
contribute to disease. Through this competition we hope to encourage
students to find their voice by connecting science and politics - looking
at changing community conditions related to health.
The Robert H. Bierman Student Health Journalism Award was created in
1998 upon the retirement of Dr. Bierman, director of the student health
services and medical director for 20 years.
First prize ($150), second prize ($100), and two honorable mentions
will be publicly announcement of award winners will be made in April/May
