The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs

I had a fever and a sore throat and felt miserable.
The guy down the hall had an upset stomach and my roommate cut her finger.
Everyone had advice, but no one even had a band-aid...
I consulted a pharmacist and started my own medicine cabinet-in a shoe box!

Here is what the pharmacist said to put in:

  • ibuprofen to reduce inflammation, pain and fever
  • band-aids and bandages of assorted sizes for minor cuts
  • antibiotic ointment
  • hydrocortisone cream for itchy bites and rashes
  • Pepto-Bismol or Mylanta for upset stomach
  • Imodium for diarrhea
  • cold/flu medicine and throat lozenges
  • a thermometer
  • tweezers for splinters and other small crises
  • sunscreen, SPF 15 or higher

I also added:

  • safety pins and a small sewing kit
  • clear nail polish for runs in stockings
  • chapstick and moisturizer
  • dental floss
  • cotton swabs (like Q-tips), but not for ear canals
  • nail clippers
  • contraceptives, including condoms
  • insect repellent
  • $10, just in case I need something and have no money

Remember:

  • Medicines are best kept in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. The bathroom or kitchen is the worst place because the temperature is constantly changing and the humidity can break down or alter tablets.
  • Check expiration dates periodically, and especially before use.
  • Follow the directions and read the label on all medicines before taking.
  • Finish all prescribed medications completely and dont share prescribed medicines, regardless of symptoms.
  • What is good for you may hurt your friend.
  • Be aware of drug interactions with alcohol.
  • Plan ahead. ( The last thing I wanted to do when I was sick was go to the store.)
  • Call a student health center if you have any questions.
