Waiting Time and appointments

The Rutgers Student Health Centers are designed to provide health care for Rutgers Students. To receive health care at any of the health centers, make an appointment with a health care provider of your choice.

Appointments: Arranging for an appointment at a health center is the best way to ensure seeing the practitioner of your choice. It also assures that you will spend less time waiting at the health center.

How to make an Appointment:

You may make an appointment by calling the health center of your choice or by dropping in during the health centers regular working hours to make an appointment with the receptionist. The time set for your appointment will be held for you. It is very important to arrive at the time scheduled for your appointment or shortly before, so that you and your provider will have enough time to interact. If you need to cancel an appointment, call the health center in advance so that another student may be seen in your place.

Appointments are necessary for the following types of health care needs: gynecological exam, physical exam, counseling, and chronic care, such as diabetes control and allergies (except emergency).

Problems of an emergency nature do not require appointments. Care should be sought promptly for such problems as: sore throats, sexually transmitted infections, and other acute infections, accidents, and injuries.

Walk-ins: Going to your local health center without an appointment will be a problem in most cases. Call first for the next available appointment. Medical emergencies however, will be seen immediately. In the event of an emergency, tell the receptionist if you are in pain or if you need to lie down.

When you come into a health center to receive care, go to the front desk for help from the receptionist.

Waiting Times & Delays:

Because the number of students needing health service is greater than the number of health care providers, students are asked to make an appointment. Sometimes appointments are available for the same day that you are calling.

Practitioners make every effort to see students as soon as possible, but at high-traffic times, especially lunch time, or in case of other emergencies, waiting times may be longer. Waiting times often vary across the health centers.

Common situations that cause delay

Uncancelled Appointments: Making an appointment will assure time with a practitioner. Unfortunately, when students make appointments and do not keep them or cancel them, time is wasted that might have been used to help another student. Cancellations should be made (by phone or in person) 24 hours in advance.

Lateness: Arriving late for an appointment may cause the student with the next appointment to be seen even later. Extreme lateness may also require your being rescheduled with another appointment.

Use of health care centers during noon time: The lunch time - approximately 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm is a popular time for students to use the health centers. It is also a time when health service personnel have lunch breaks, which results in an overflow of students when fewer practitioners are available. This situation causes delays and increased waiting times. Avoid seeking care during these hours if you do not have an appointment, if possible.

In Newark: Walk-in hours (noon-1:30 pm) are reserved for emergencies, acute infections, consultations, call backs, lab results and prescription renewals. Please make appointments for other problems.
