Welcome to Rutgers!
As Student Health Advocates of the Department of Health Education, we
are concerned about your continued good health. Many of you: are living
away from home for the first time, have to find new buildings and
classrooms, and get along with a lot of new and diverse people. There are
different responsibilities and new romances. You are in new situations and
have to make decisions that you never faced before. We want your
adjustment to college life to be successful, so we offer you these
messages for a healthy and safe first year:
1. Its OK to be confused, a lot of people are. Dont be afraid to
ask questions.
2. Respect yourself. Be in charge of your body, keep it healthy, and
keep your mind clear so that you can make the best choices for yourself.
3. Learn to trust your gut feelings when you are in situations which
dont feel quite right.
4. Choose friends with whom you are comfortable and can be yourself. Be
there for each other and let them know you care.
5. Respect everyone else. Let others make their own decisions and
expect the same respect from them.
6. Take advantage of the diversity of people represented at Rutgers
University. Learn about life from another vantage point and share your
culture and lifestyle with them.
7. Rutgers and the surrounding area offers a variety of activities such
as plays, concerts, and movies. Get out an get a feel for the area.
8. Take a recreational classes at the gym or join an organization or
club that interests you.
9. Get help if you need it. If you are confused or concerned about such
health issues as alcohol and other drugs, smoking, sex, sexuality,
HIV/AIDS, stress and nutrition, call our department at. Come and talk to
us.
