The Sexual Health Advocacy Program helps students make informed, resposible decisions regarding their relationships, body image, and sexual health, in part by training Sexual Health Advocates to provide educational workshops to residence halls, academic classes, and student organizations. SHADES Theater (Student Health Advocates Developing Educational Scenarios):

SHADES Theater is a multicultural, interactive, improvisational theater ensemble, now in its ninth year. Students create, write, and perform scenes dealing with real life issues -- sexual health, violence, relationships, racism, homophobia, body image, and more. Performances include a facilitated discussion between the actors (remaining in character) and the audience. Performances are a safe place to talk openly about crucial and often untouched issues.

For information on scheduling a performance or information about auditions, call the Department of Health Education at (732) 932-7402 x 273.

Important note: These are not the extent of department offerings. Advocates can adjust to your needs. We can combine programs, create one based on your situation, or simply facilitate a discussion. We are available for training sessions in residence halls, organizations, etc.

PESQI (Peer Educators on Sexuality and Queer Issues)

PESQI students participate in facilitated panel discussions that create a safe forum for the discussion of their experience as LGBTQ students and allies. PESQI students dispel the myths that surround the LGBTQ communities. They encourage honest communication through personal accounts of their own lives and experiences at Rutgers University. As peer educators, they engage their audience in open dialogues. PESQI educates audiences on the ways that heterosexism and homophobia impact everyone in the community. PESQI students also address the impact of race, ethnicity, and class on expressions of sexual orientation.

PESQI can provide a facilitated panel discussion for your residence hall, classroom, student organization, fraternity or sorority, or staff.

Training opportunities are offered in both the fall and spring semesters. Interested students must attend at least one full training each semester. PESQI is open to undergraduate and graduate students. PESQI is open to LGBTQ students and our allies. To get schedule a panel discussion or to get involved, contact fmaresca@rci.rutgers.edu or (732) 932-7402, ext. 272.
