RUTGERS UNIVERSITY STUDENT INSURANCE
New this year!
This year, Rutgers University is sponsoring a Student Health Insurance plan with The Chickering Group. This plan was designed to meets the needs of the Rutgers University students.
Who is The Chickering Group?
The Chickering Group is part of Aetna, a leader in the insurance industry with a strong knowledge of healthcare and an expansive network of physicians, hospitals and other health care providers.
Why do I need insurance?
If you are currently uninsured or will be terminated from your parent’s insurance plan in the near future, you are urged to consider this student insurance plan. Health care costs are at an all-time high and unexpected medical expenses could set you back financially.
What is student insurance?
There is a mandatory fee included in the tuition bill for full time students that gives students access to the RU Health Centers and includes a modest insurance benefit. This benefit is referred to as Health Services Plus. Part time students do not have that fee in their tuition bill but can pay the fee to have the Health Services Plus.
The Health Services Plus is designed to support the Health Centers by providing benefits for such services as some labs tests, referrals to specialists and Emergency Room visits. (Maximum benefits $5,000) This plan is an excess plan and is secondary to a parent’s or spouses insurance plan.
Students have the option of purchasing additional insurance coverage. Students can choose between Student Health Insurance Plan 1 which offers coverage up to $100,000 per condition per policy year or they can purchase Plan 2 which offers coverage of $250,000 per condition per policy year. Both plans provide benefits for covered medical services after a $250 deductible per condition. The Plans will pay 80% of covered services up to $10,000 and then 100% of covered medical expenses up until the policy maximum.
How Do I get the Student insurance?
The Chickering Group has a comprehensive website where students can easily access information on the plan as well as make payment for the insurance. Go to www.chickering.com, click on “Find Your School”. Information can also be obtained at the Office of Student Insurance located in the Hurtado Health Center, 11 Bishop Place, NJ 08901. Where can I go for services?
The first stop is the RU Student Health Center. They often can provide the attention you need. If you need care they can’t provide, they will refer you to a doctor or other health care provider who belongs to the Aetna provider network. Check your campus website for locations and hours.
If you are ill, injured or away from campus, you may still receive benefits from this plan. To learn more out Preferred Providers visit www.chickering.com.
How much does the insurance cost?

Camden - $167.75 Newark - $140.50 New Brunswick - $164.25
The annual cost for students for Plan 1 Is $424.00, and Plan 2 is $552.00
Can I buy the insurance at any time?
You can purchase Plan 1 or Plan 2 only in the first month of the each semester unless there is a change in life event affecting your insurance coverage such as loss of insurance coverage through a job, or you reached the age limit on your current policy.
Are there any exclusions to the plan?
Yes, some conditions are not covered under the policy at all. For example, there is no coverage for allergies or acne. Some conditions require a referral from the Student Health Center. It is suggested that you read the policy details carefully.
Is Dental treatment covered?
The Student Insurance plans do not provide coverage for dental treatment unless there is an injury to a tooth, and that benefit is limited. Vital Savings offers significant discounts on dental services. This is not an insurance plan but a discount on general dentistry, cleanings, root canals, crowns and orthodontia. The annual fee is $25.00. Enroll on the website of www.chickering.com.
Can I cover my spouse, domestic partner, or child?
Yes, you can purchase the Health Services Plus plan and the Plan 1 or Plan 2 for your spouse, domestic partner, and dependent children. In order to purchase Plan 1 or Plan, you would need to purchase the Health Services Plus plan for your family members. You may enroll on the Chickering website.
How do I submit claims? Bills must be submitted within 90 days from the date of treatment to:
Chickering Claims Administrators
PO Box 15708
Boston, MA 02215-0014
Payment will be made directly to the provider unless bill receipts and proof of payment are submitted. An Explanation of Benefits will be mailed to you when a claim is processed.
If you have primary insurance, the itemized bill and the primary explanation of benefits needs to be submitted to the above address.
If you were a student last year and previously had a claim with Mega Life and Health, some bills still might need to be submitted to Mega Life and Health for a continuing condition. The staff at the insurance office will assist you in that situation.
