What is Lunelle:
- Lunelle is a relatively new once a month contraceptive (birth
control) injection. It is NOT to be confused with Depo
Provera (an older every 3 months injection which has not
been recalled).
Why the Recall:
- On October 10, 2002, Pharmacia (the drug company which makes
Lunelle) issued a recall notice because of concerns that there may not
have been enough medication in the syringe to prevent pregnancy.
There is no concern that anything in the injection might have been
harmful.
What Should I Do?
- Don't panic. Most women who have been using Lunelle will
likely NOT become pregnant.
- For the rest of the current cycle use backup contraception (e.g.
condoms).
- If you are late for your next period (or if you have missed your
last one), then schedule an appointment
to have a pregnancy test done.
- If you have not missed a period, then we would NOT recommend a
pregnancy test. The reason for this, is that it can take up
to 10-14 days after having intercourse before a pregnancy test will
become positive. If you take it too soon, you may get a
"false negative" (the test says that you are not pregnant,
but you really just took it too soon to tell).
