  • Try to quit all at once; throw out all cigarettes. Clean out all ashtrays and put them, matches, and lighters away. You are less likely to think about smoking if you cannot see anything connected with it.

Exercise helps to relieve tension. If you combine quitting with a program of exercise you are less likely to replace smoking with overeating and gaining weight. Walk to school, climb stairs, go to the gym.

  • Stock up on gum, carrot sticks, and breath mints. Reach for these instead of a cigarette.

  • Whenever you feel the urge to reach for a cigarette, take a deep breath, hold it for ten seconds and release it slowly. This step helps you take your mind off cigarettes and also reduces tension.

  • Eat three or more small meals a day to regulate your blood sugar level which alleviates urge to smoke.

  • Change your habits related to smoking. Eat breakfast in a new place; sit in a different chair while watching TV; doodle while talking on the phone; study in a smoke-free place; start being with more people who do not smoke; avoid the beverage that you usually have when you smoke (especially those with caffeine).

Surround yourself with friends to support, encourage, and help cheer you on with your efforts to become smoke-free. Maybe a friend will quit with you. These encouragements can prevent you from backsliding once you have quit.

Treat yourself to something special--a massage, a bubble bath, a new tape, a nap, tickets to a sporting event, play or concert.
