Gender-affirming healthcare is often covered by health insurance companies, but each company is different, and patients must investigate their own specific health insurance plan to determine benefits and coverage. Prescription drug coverage is often handled separately from the medical health benefits and may be managed by a different company altogether. Be sure to ask about prescription drug coverage, as well.
Rutgers Student Health will provide gender-affirming medical care for registered students regardless of the type of insurance coverage they have. Many of our students receive their health coverage through the Student Health Insurance Plan, which is an on-campus resource.
The standard plans offered by the SHIP (underwritten by UnitedHealthcare Student Resources) standard plans include coverage for the following:
- Continuous hormone therapy
- Laboratory testing to monitor hormone therapy
- Genital reconstruction surgery
- Psychotherapy
- Chest reduction surgery
- Surgery to change specified secondary sex characteristics
- Certain treatments are not covered, including:
- Reversal of sex transformation surgery
- Fertility preservation
- Cosmetic procedures and treatment
Every situation is evaluated on its own merits, and any treatment needs to meet specific coverage criteria. Please note that meeting the criteria is not a guarantee of payment, as a final determination cannot be made until the classification codes are submitted and reviewed.
