Crisis Intervention

We are glad you are here. And we’re here to help.

  • If you believe your life is in imminent danger and you cannot keep yourself safe, or you or someone else has decided to seriously harm or kill yourself/themselves or someone else, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room, if it is safe to do so. The nearest Emergency Room is located at:
  • Students who need immediate help and intervention for a psychological/emotional issue can see/talk to an on-call counselor at CAPS. (see below on how to connect with CAPS on-call).

What is a Crisis or Emergency Situation

These signs can help determine if you or someone you know is in crisis or needs urgent attention. When in doubt, make the call for help.

  • Having thoughts about immediate harm to oneself (e.g. cutting, burning, or hitting self) or killing oneself
  • Having thoughts about hurting or killing others
  • Planning to attempt suicide (e.g. searching online for information on how to attempt suicide, writing or asking about how to kill oneself, recent increased discussion of suicide or fascination with death)
  • Hearing voices/seeing things that no one else hears or sees
  • Strongly considering dropping out of school
  • Concerns about your alcohol/drug use or others are concerned about your alcohol/drug use
  • Experiencing a physical or sexual assault
  • Someone close to me has died/committed suicide
  • Being so upset that there are big changes in eating/studying/other daily routines for more than 3 days.

If none of the above apply but you still believe that a crisis appointment is necessary for you, please let the receptionist know and you will be seen that day. If your situation, though upsetting, is not a crisis, we encourage you to schedule a regular counseling appointment instead. If you schedule a regular appointment, you will be given the earliest available time. See <scheduling an appointment> (create hyperlink) to connect with CAPS.
