Monitoring your sexual health is an important part of maintaining your overall health. If you are sexually active, it is important to get screened regularly for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Even if you are not sexually active, we encourage you to discuss with us any questions or concerns you may have regarding your sexual health.
An STI is an infection spread from one person to another through sexual contact. This includes vaginal, anal, and oral sex as well as genital touching. STIs affect all people of all genders and sexual orientations and often show no signs or symptoms. Many STIs can be treated and cured; some can be treated, but will remain with you for life; and some can be potentially fatal. If you have an STI, our providers will prescribe appropriate medication and/or treatment.
Rutgers Student Health can evaluate you for:
- HIV
- Syphilis
- Gonorrhea
- Chlamydia
- Hepatitis A, B, and C
- Herpes
- Trichomoniasis
In addition to STI testing, we can provide treatment plans and prescriptions.
For people at high risk of HIV, our clinicians can prescribe pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), which is an oral medication taken daily to help prevent infection. High-risk populations include:
- Men who have sex with men
- People whose sexual partner is HIV-positive
- People considering getting pregnant whose sexual partner is HIV-positive
- People in non-monogamous sexual relationships
- Sex workers
- Injection drug users
PrEP involves regular follow-up visits with a clinician, which can also be provided by Rutgers Student Health.
